W By DENISE M. GUSTAVSON elcome to the inaugural issue of Inkjet's Age, a specialty publication dedicated to the production inkjet market. There's a revolution going on in the graphics arts marketplace. Just a few short years ago, the digital color continuous feed market barely existed. But today, more and more companies are producing an ever-increasing range of equipment in the production inkjet space. The battle for a piece of this rapidly growing market has begun. But why? What's so compelling about production inkjet technology? Three reasons stand out: production inkjet offers high productivity, a very competitive ROI, and high quality prints. And because these systems greatly exceed what came before, today's color production inkjet devices are creating new market opportunities. According to InfoTrends in its recent study The High-Speed Continuous-Feed Color Inkjet Opportunity: Global Insights from Leading Customers, by 2015 color production inkjet will account for about 40 percent of digital color pages. InfoTrends marks this market segment as the fastest growing sector in the printing industry. So who buys these production inkjet devices and what are they doing with them? The majority of installations are at transaction printing sites or sites performing a combination of transactional and direct mail applications. According to InfoTrends' research, transaction is the leading application, accounting for 44 percent of all color production inkjet prints. Direct mail is the second largest application as transaction sites are increasingly adding direct mail to the application range. Books and TransPromo tie for the third largest application. The share of TransPromo is substantial, and it is now estimated that every fifth transaction page is currently a TransPromo page. So what's next? As print costs continue to drop and image quality improves, fuller coverage and coated media are keys to the future of production color inkjet. The promotional publications market also looks promising. Several marketers already are bringing "magalogs" to life using a powerful combination of customer data and inkjet technology. Inkjet's Age is designed to dive into exactly what is happening in the world of production inkjet printing and will help readers to fully understand the new capabilities production inkjet has to offer. There's a revolution going on in the graphic arts marketplace and inkjet is at the center of it all. This is Inkjet's Age in the commercial print industry. With this new brand, we are looking forward to providing comprehensive coverage of this growing market opportunity. "The battle for a piece of this rapidly-growing market has begun."
