signed to work together to deliver
a finished product that exceeds
expectations.
"The customer can feel good
that the paper was created for
these specific types of inks and has
been tested on a variety of Canon
Solutions America's inkjet plat-
forms," said Lawson.
According to Hunt, such ad-
vances in inkjet printing and fin-
ishing not only empower the bur-
geoning world of self-publishing,
but the larger trend toward shorter runs
throughout the book-publishing industry.
For author Miranda Hardy, who signed
copies of "Wacky Waddles" onsite at
GRAPH EXPO, it has certainly gone a
long way in helping make her publishing
dreams a reality.
"It's absolutely wonderful," said Hardy.
"It gives writers a creative edge and moti-
vation to do something they always want-
ed to do, but never dared because they
thought it would be too difficult." ✚
print the book. Available in
seven basis weights, the paper is
specifically designed for high-
speed digital inkjet presses.
"Not only did it show off
the ability of the press itself,
but the combination of the
press and the paper gave
us near-offset quality," said
Francis A. McMahon, vice
president, Marketing, Produc-
tion Print Solutions division
of CSA. "Most people looked
at it and said the inkjet actually
looked better than offset."
According to Shawn Lawson,
brand manager, Printing and
Uncoated Bristol papers for In-
ternational Paper, the proprietary
ImageLok technology works with the
Océ brand of production inkjet
solutions to deliver crisp, vivid
images and graphics.
"The ImageLok technology
helps the color stay on top of the
sheet and really pop instead of
soaking in and dulling out the
boldness of the colors," said Law-
son. "It reacts to the inks used on
the Océ ColorStream in a highly
efficient way to deliver a nice,
bright, colorful product."
The book was finished on the
showroom floor by Standard Fin-
ishing Systems, which used a Hunkeler
UW6 Unwinder to unwind preprinted
rolls into a Hunkeler CS6 cutter, where
they were cut into 12-by-18-inch sheets.
The sheets were intelligently accumu-
lated in the Horizon StitchLiner 6000
Digital to be stitched, folded, and three-
knife trimmed.
"The piece looked stunning," said
Mark Hunt, director, strategic alliances,
Standard Finishing Systems. "The con-
sistency of the color across the sheet was
very impressive without any banding or
other imperfections."
Such initiatives go a long way to dem-
onstrate the quality of inkjet to book
printers, who otherwise might not have
considered inkjet an option for such a
heavily illustrated, highly colorful project.
According to Lawson, the partnership
between Canon Solutions America and
International Paper gives customers the
assurance the two technologies are de-
