By DENISE M. GUSTAVSON A dramatic shift in the market has started. Over the last several years, we've all heard and talked about the shift from analog to digital. But there's another evolution in the market that's equally significant: the move from electrophotography (EP) to high-speed inkjet (HSIJ). According to a recent report by International Data Corp. (IDC), placements of both monochrome and color EP equipment declined in the past year, while HSIJ installations continue on their growth path. IDC expects HSIJ to reach $1 bil- lion in equipment sales by 2018 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8 percent. Additionally, IDC reported that HSIJ also became the overall market share leader, achieving 54 percent of the placements in the high-volume segments of 150+ ipm monochrome market. While the crossover in placements occurred in 2013, IDC forecasts that HSIJ will grow to 75 percent of placements by 2018. According to IDC, a dramatic technology shift occurred in 2013 as high-speed inkjet maintained its momentum, while incumbent tech- nologies declined. High-speed inkjet vendors will make great strides toward improving print quality and substrate flexibility. It's clear that the technology shift is well underway and HSIJ will become the dominant technology for tradi- tional applications produced by the existing installed base of continuous- feed printers. What does this mean for PSPs? For early entrants into this market, more competition will be headed your way—sooner rather than later. These shops have had the most time to come up with the right high-value applications and find the right balance of operating costs, productivity, and print quality. For those on the cusp of making the move into high-speed inkjet, it might be time to stop delaying and sign on the dotted line. For those not looking at this technology, now might be the time to seriously start considering if the technology is right for your business. For more information, check out the report from IDC, "Worldwide and US Continuous Feed 2014-2018 Forecast and Analysis." Be sure to make plans to attend GRAPH EXPO 14 in Chicago as well. The show floor will feature various high-speed inkjet presses—including several new entrants to the market. That's something you don't want to miss. " Inkjet's is an evolving story in terms of its applications and scope.
