"Coatings are the last thing down on a piece of paper, but the very first thing a customer sees." —anonymous coating expert, page 14 NEWS New Offset Plates, Platesetter for Panther Graphics Increased production without any of the waste is giving a Rochester, NY print firm a boost. Full-service print communica- tions firm Panther Graphics now is using two of Kodak's newest offset technologies to meet customer demands for high-quality and sustainable print. The eco- nomic and environmental ben- efit of an investment in Achieve Platesetters with Sonora XP Process Free Plates has become increasingly popular. "By removing all chemistry, water, equipment, energy, and waste related to the processing step with Sonora XP Process Free Plates, we have been able to slash our prep time in half and have experienced an over- all throughput jump of over 30 percent," said Daryll "Tony" Jackson, president/CEO of Pan- ther Graphics. "We've found that Sonora XP Plates increase our capacity to grow by allowing faster, more reliable, high- quality jobs. The Achieve Platesetter is faster and more reliable than Panther's former platesetter. The decision to pair these two advanced technologies was an easy one." Aiming to reach women aged 21 to 55 within a two-mile radius of the club's Chicago-area location, Graphics Plus leveraged 1to1 Create Marketing Services to develop a customized campaign with offers for free trials. Early campaign results showed a more than 10 percent increase in facility attendance. MyPRINTResource.com/11536970 Penta Quarterly to Publish as Glossy Magazine A successful quarterly insert will undergo a makeover next month. Barron's, the Dow Jones financial weekly, will publish its Penta wealth-management quarterly as a glossy magazine insert beginning with the Septem- ber 29 issue. Until now, Penta has been published as a news- print section of Barron's. "This is a great advance for Penta," said Ed Finn, editor and president of Barron's. "We launched Penta in September 2009 in the wake of the credit crisis and the Madoff scandal to provide 'trusted advice for families with assets of $5 mil- lion or more.' We felt no media outlet had done a good job of offering wealthy families advice on such important issues as choosing a private bank, sizing up individual hedge funds, estab- lishing trusts for future generations, and giving intelligently to philanthropies." The September Penta and subsequent quarterly issues will be inserted into Barron's. Penta will be printed on 44-pound glossy stock with a trim size of 9.875 by 11.5 inches with a 70-pound cover stock. Binding will be saddle-stitched. By integrating with IWCO's digital print technology, the Inveloper is providing direct marketing customers with the ability to increase direct mail open and response rates through more cre- ative and personalized outer envelopes and selective inserting. Enhancing direct mail campaign performance with increased personalization capabilities was an important criteria when IWCO Direct invested in digital printing technology, which included adding multiple Océ ColorStream 3900 digital inkjet printers across its platform. Instead of the traditional method of inserting materials into pre-converted envelopes, the Inveloper uses roll paper stock that wraps around the contents of a direct mail package, which is then sealed to create the outer envelope. It improves production quality by combining envelope production and inserting into a N E W S O F T H E P R I N T I N G I N D U S T R Y A T A G L A N C E w w w.
